Gender bias follows us everywhere we go even in this virtual world. I got a valuable comment from a “male” well wisher that my blog should only contain stuff related to women.
I asked “what do u mean by women stuff”.
He said “stuff like clothes, recipes, kids etc”. (It left me speechless for a moment).
That gave him enough time to go to his next question which was “Why do you include technology posts about computers etc?”
Now I had a counter point here, I said “Why do I write a blog then?”
That did not convince him and he continued “No, you should put things women will search on net. Because a housewife will be disappointed after she visits your site”
I tried to stay calm “Disappointed! I do not think technology is for men only. I love to use a laptop which is like my best friend and is one of my most valued possessions. Ok, i don’t have an iPhone or a Blackberry but would love to explore one when I get a chance to hold it
) (Some of my friends have them!).”
He did not give up even then and said “why do you have cars on your site then?”
I could not stop smiling J. He seemed confused and said “I only meant to guide you in your best interest”
I said “thank you” and we parted.
This conversation left many questions in my mind. I am no feminist by any means but why can’t women have interests like nature, cars (I drive a car all day long but cannot have interest in latest cars!), science, technology, adventure, games and many more. Is this the mentality of an eastern man or men in general?
Being a woman and a human I do have freedom to add on my blog what really interests me. Allah made this whole wide world for all (including women) to live, explore, enjoy and ponder upon. Our Kind and Just Creator did not make any divisions in his resouces.
This random scribbling gave me some satisfaction.

Oh my God !!! He actually tried to argue with you… LOL… Acha, plz put the latest cars on ur website, as I follow them like crazy and my life long ambition is to own a couple of 911s, Turbos.. I’ve made my hubby promise me, he’ll get me one, inshallah !!! I am a woman, I don’t own a Blackberry, iPhone, I am not interested in them, but there are other electronics which I would like to know about…
))
What you are doing here is simply marvellous…i am a housewife and i love this site…its very easy for others to give suggestions and comments after all MEN like them do have THEIR PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD…
so keep up the good work..write whatever you wish…whatever you feel like…All the best!!!
Girls! thanks for your encouragement…
Great job!!! Loved your blog and will visit often to read more. In fact would love to have your comments on our site. It is all about women of Pakistan and their achievements in any and every role including housewives, entrepreneurs, professionals and corporate executives.
who’s saying that women r not created equal? its only that their interests in electronics shud be the ones used in kitchens or cleaning of home… interest in mobiles is very understandable as women do love to talk all the time, everywhere they go…!
I think women have to learn the difference between needs and wants. Alot of women develop interests in many things including electronics, even if they may not be needs. My friends have blackberries, I NEED them too !!! Whereas it may not be a need.
This is just another way many women (not you may be, but some women in general) keep their husbands busy buying stuff for them.
Liking it just for the sake of liking, is definitely not bad in it self!
As long as its pure liking with not hidden “stuff” behind it.
And why do men need iPhones and blackberries???
I am not comparing men and women …just asking is the technological development for men only?
Women in US launched a movement in 1930′s called “Women Liberation”. Before this movement, these women were just living like our women do. They came out of their houses after they’d achieved success in what they were demanding. And now the result is in front of all of us. If you ask someone his father’s name, he/she doesn’t know anything about it. I just want to ask you that aren’t you happy in this society where people still respect women? The only problem with our women is that they watch TV too much and perceive things in a wrong way.
You’re using computer, internet, and blogging, what else more do you need? you’re in far much better position than 98% women of the Pakistan. I’ve observed one thing, i.e. educated and those women who belong to rich families often complain about gender discrimination and i don’t get it all. If you still have any confusion in your mind then open Quran and read Surah-e-Noor with translation. I guess it will clarify everything to you.
Adnan!
I have no confusion in my mind regarding the position and duties assigned to me as a woman in my religion. And Alhamdolillah I am satisfied by the “respect” we get in this society….(“respect” which is a luxury u know…this needs debate).
Secondly, I was just curious that while living in a society where we see so much hunger, poverty, misery around us…. do men really need iPhones….c’mon I was just desiring to hold one!!! What this hue and cry all about!!!!!…..
Thanks for assuming that I am from a rich family…..
Lastly the reason of my post was not to compare men and women…..i just wanted to say that women can have an interest in latest technology, science, sports etc. You must be knowing we have more and more women going to engineering universities too and they are Mashallah living according to the norms of the society and religion. And if a lady wishes to go against them then she may not be “educated” or “interested in the world”.
Being a muslim I do not disagree with anything in Quran. Entering Islam means that i surrender my will in the favour of Allah’s will……but my Lord allows me to avail the bounties of this universe
Both men and women needs to be educated and they have to understand their position as well as their duties. It was a good post though a bit controversial for some people but still credit goes to you. Keep it up!
Did you notice he was not helping you but just “trying” to help you becuase YOU was no ready to accept such a help…:) How innocent conversation you both contributed. …And the way you share it with us.
The gender debate is ages old. Not all male are alike, and not all female!
Recommending someone something can be taken as offensive, but sometimes the person recommending can not convey the whole thing, or convey it in a positive manner. Perhaps the recomendations are in good interest but put up in wrong way.
Thanks
