Could this vaccine cure all allergies?
A vaccine could help sufferers of all kinds of allergy. More than 300 patients are taking part in a trial of the jab which starts this month. The vaccine, made by Swiss company Cytos Biotechnology, contains a compound that ‘re-educates’ the immune system so that it doesn’t overreact, causing an allergic reaction.
Results from a small pilot study showed a hundredfold drop in sensitivity to grass pollen. Research suggests the benefits may last for months. ‘It looks like a very promising potential new treatment because if it did work, it would work for anyone with any kind of allergy,’ says John Collard of Allergy UK.
‘Results of the preliminary clinical trials look quite positive.’
