We call it “niaz-bo”(Holy basil)

I had a mouth ulcer and nausea, the doctor suggested a digestion problem was behind this. I followed the advice of my grand mother, my doctor, my husband and some friends too. You may have guessed right that I was in a complete confused state after this. But I discovered some very useful and simple herbs and kitchen items which help in digestion problems.

I used to chew zeera (cumin seeds) after meals and this helps in digesting the food. Let me tell you it does help! Having green tea after dinner is a good and common practice in my country. The most wonderful herb was what we call “niaz-bo” which is “holy basil” in English and “tulsi” in hindi. This plant is easily available in Islamabad.

Leaves of this plant has many benefits, some are as follows:

Sore throat: Water boiled with basil leaves can be taken in sore throat. This water can be used to gargle.

Mouth infections: Chewing 5 to 7 leaves in the morning and evening is quite useful in mouth infections.

Children ailments: Common pediatric problems like cold, cough, fever, diarrhea and vomiting respond favorably to the juice of tulsi leaves. It work as appetizer and promotes digestion by helping in secretion of digestive enzymes

Heart Diseases: The Holy Basil contains vitamin-C and other anti oxidants such as Eugenol which protect the heart from harmful effects of free radicals. In addition, Eugenol, a component in its essential oils, is very beneficial in reducing cholesterol from blood.

Stress: Vitamin-C and other anti oxidants in Holy Basil, apart from repairing damages done by the free radicals, also minimize the stress induced by these oxidants. They soothe nerves, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and thus reduce stress. One such component is Camphene. Potassium also reduces blood pressure related stress by replacing sodium

Dental Care: Holy Basil destroys bacteria which are responsible for dental cavities, plaque, tartar, bad breath etc. and protects teeth. It also has astringent properties which make the gums hold the teeth tighter thereby protecting them from falling.

Respiratory disorder: It is an effective natural cure for upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). It works as good expectorant relieving from wet cough. It is very useful in bronchitis and asthmatic conditions. It is very beneficial in Asthma as it relieves congestion and facilitates breathing.

Immunity: Holy Basil is so good for boosting up the immune system that cannot be explained in words. It protects from nearly all sorts of infections from viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Recent studies show that it is also helpful in inhibiting growth HIV and carcinogenic cells.

Some other benefits of holy basil is that it bolsters immunity, enhances stamina, provides support during cold season ,promotes healthy metabolism and it is a natural immuno-modulator
